5 Things to Do Before Your First Cup Of Coffee
When most of us wake up in the morning the first thing we think about is drinking a hot cup of coffee. In fact, if we’re being honest, it’s the reason why we get out of bed some mornings. It’s part of our morning routine to stumble down the hall towards that cup of liquid motivation.
After our first cup reality sets in and our busy day begins. Most of the time it’s a real struggle for us to make it through that first cup without being interrupted. That’s why I want to encourage you to read the list of 5 things you should do before your first cup of coffee. Your morning routine can play a huge role in how productive you are for the rest of your day.
1. Stretch
Stretching is a great way to start your day, especially if you’re at a stage in life where “a good night’s rest” is few and far between. When we get up our joints can be stiff, and our muscles can be sore. A good stretch can make you feel more flexible and motivated. You’ll notice an instant boost from this simple activity.
2. Write Down 3 Things You Want To Accomplish That Day
This is important. I make myself do it each day. Life is busy and we all have a lot on our plate! The to-do list is never completed and I know that once I drink my first cup of coffee, I’ll be in ‘go-mode’ with an additional 100 things I need to accomplish.
While my mind is as fresh as it’s going to be that day, I write down 3 things I want to accomplish. Working towards completing those 3 things seems a lot less overwhelming. It’s a realistic goal and it helps me stay focused. Let’s not lie to ourselves and try to be a superhero by solving all of the world’s problems in one day, give it up you overachievers!

3. Hug Someone You Love
Whether that’s your kids, your spouse, the cat or a picture of someone you care about, hug someone before you start the day. There are so many wonderful benefits to hugging. To learn more about the health benefits from hugging check out this article about the 10 Reasons Why We Need At Least 8 Hugs During The Day. Hugging is not only beneficial to us, but you can also never go back and get all the hugs you missed. Don’t just make this a goal, make it a priority.
4. Check The Weather
I have been called a weather nerd, and yea its probably true but I’m okay with that. Each morning before my feet hit the floor, I check the weather. Once I do that, I know how to dress the kids for the day and what activities we can and cannot do. Being a weather nerd has its advantages, I rarely get caught in rain without an umbrella!
5. Think Something Positive About Yourself
“You is kind, you is smart, you is important”, words are powerful and we should use this type of positive reinforcement on ourselves. Pick something you like about yourself (change it up each day) and repeat those kind words out loud. We live in a world that feeds on negativity and judges us harshly for our appearance, beliefs, and lifestyle. Today I want you to start on a positive note. If you don’t believe in yourself then why should anyone else? Choose to see something beautiful about yourself and allow yourself to be proud of it.
I hope you can all benefit by giving these suggestions a try. Once you complete all 5 things be sure to reward yourself with a delicious cup of coffee…or two!

How To Be Fearless and Confident

These are great tips! I drink my coffee on the road, but I can definitely focus on these things before leaving the house. Also I never check the weather, which means I’m never quite as prepared as I should be!

I’m still laughing about the fact that you do things before your first cup of coffee. But I guess now that I look at the list, I do too. I generally snuggle my alarm clock for 5-10 minutes before getting moving (she is six and always needs warming up after the walk from her room). I check the time and if I have missed messages or calls. I try to pray for my family and day. I stretch, brush my teeth, etc. And then have coffee. But it is already brewed . . . most of the time. I forgot to add water last night and had a very nice pot of hot air today. Sigh.

I have a Day Designer and one feature I love is it has an area for Top 3 tasks to get done. I agree in a day with Neverending to do lists, it’s a good idea to focus on 3. Hugging my 3 sons and Superhubby are essential too!! Congrats on the SITS feature!

I love these tips! Too often do we rush around in the mornings and not take time to notice the little things (or ones we love)!

Breeze says
Emily, my husband takes a shot of apple cider vinegar each day too. I’m struggling with the taste, I’m a big baby I know! Do you have any suggestions for me?
Joey Crawford says
Great point regarding deciding three things you are going to do that day. I find it really beneficial to have goals for the day. I tend to stay in the shower until I have decided my desired outcomes for the day!
Thanks for the share,

I LOVE this list. I’m currently actively revamping my morning routine and this list is absolutely perfect for it. Though, I have to admit, I would have to add “feed the dogs” to the list because the SECOND my eyes are open, my pups are jumping on me demanding breakfast.

Great tips! I really try to pick out my three priorities of the day every morning, but it’s sometimes difficult to pick realistic goals of the day. I also always try to have three priorities of the week, it’s really helpful 🙂
Thank you for sharing!

Coffee is the VERY FIRST THING I do in the morning… Still love your list – but it MIGHT come directly after the coffee 😀

I usually read the New York Times briefing when I am still in bed. I am starting to think that that isn’t the best idea…I bet a hug would work a lot better than the news.
Bonnie says
Good tips! I need to try the stretching part. I make a list the night before of things that need to be done. Before I have my coffee, I take the dog for a short walk and drink some water.

I think I may only be able to commit to stretching and thinking positive thoughts while I wait for my kettle to warm. Nobody else is usually up, and I work from home. Weather? It’s always nice inside… ?
