Beach Essentials for Toddlers
When traveling with kids we all know how important it is to come prepared with the right gear. A beach vacation with little ones is so much fun but it does come with its fair share of struggles. We know you can never have too much fun but you can have too much sun and sand! We share our our favorite beach essentials for toddlers, we hope this will help you have an amazing time on your beach vacation with your family.
Packing For the Beach: Our 10 Favorite Beach Approved Essentials
Our family has been taking yearly trips to the beach since my youngest was just a couple months old. We’ve traveled to many different beaches in the U.S and in other areas of the world. I remember, before I had kids, I would grab a towel and a good book and head to the beach. This is no longer the case! Now, a lot of preparation goes into our beach vacation. I’ve learned that having the right gear is KEY. Here are 10 items you will want when packing for the beach.
1. Flotation Swimsuit for Toddlers
This had to be listed as the #1 beach item for toddlers because on every beach vacation someone has approached me and asked where I got these flotation swimsuits! Kids hate wearing life jackets but as a parents you want them to wear one when playing in the ocean. My kids never once complained about wearing these flotation swimsuits. They would wear a normal swimsuit under them and then we would slip these one when we got to the beach. They are 100% worth the investment. They lasted us for several summers!
2. Collapsible Folding Outdoor Utility Wagon
If you’ve ever taken a family to the beach you know how hard it can be to walk back and forth from the hotel or car with kids, coolers and beach bags! This is especially challenging if you are traveling with babies and toddlers. We’ve found that a Utility Wagon is a must-have item for families traveling to the beach. When ordering one, be sure it collapses and folds up so it won’t take up much room in your car or hotel room. It also needs to be durable and designed for the beach. We highly recommend this one from Amazon.
3. Sand Free Compact Outdoor Beach / Picnic Blanket
Let’s talk about getting setup and comfortable at the beach. This can be a challenge when traveling with babies and toddlers, but never fear, we have some great suggestions on how to make this happen.
We love the size of this beach blanket; it can accommodate the entire family. It comes with stakes to help keep it stretched out. When you have a blanket this size, you can keep your baby in one sand-free area and your older kids on a different end of the blanket. The best part is this blanket folds down and comes with its own storage bag. Think of all the other ways you can use this blanket when you travel. How about a road trip picnic?
4. Sport-Brella Portable All-Weather and Sun Umbrella
What about the ideal beach umbrella for keeping your kids protected from the sun? We love this large 8-foot canopy umbrella that has side panels. One of the obstacles I faced when taking my babies to the beach was being able to protect them from the sun and sand while they napped. The Sport-Brella will keep your skin safe and protected from over 99.5% of UVA and UVB rays! It’s also large enough so that my older kids can take a break from the sun during the day as well.
5. Beach Shovels for Kids
What about beach toys? I really dislike the buckets that come with a million plastic sand toys that I know my kids will lose during our trip. That’s why I love these simple shovels. Don’t underestimate how entertaining one sand shovel can be for a toddler.
6. Sand Cleaner Wipe Off Mitt
During our last beach vacation I swore off sand. Now, obviously because I’m such a beach bum I realized this was an overreaction. However, I was tired of filling up our rental car with sand each time we traveled back to our accommodation. I found these handy Sand-Off wipe off mitts. If you’ve ever had a crying toddler begging you to get the sand off their skin you’ll know how important this one item is! These mitts wipe the sand off their little skin and BOOM, the unwanted sand dilemma is solved!
7. Microfiber Sports & Travel Towel
Beach towels are obviously necessary. Toddlers run in and out of the water constantly and each time they want to dry off before doing it all over again. I was having a hard time keeping enough towels on hand while at the beach. I love these travel towels because they dry very quickly in the sun.
I also do not like the idea of carrying 5 soaking wet beach towels back after a day spent playing in the ocean so I was glad at the end of the day we just had these to pack up. These light weight, easy to travel with, microfiber beach towels. You can get them in all colors and sizes. They are mold resistant and antimicrobial. No more “wet towels” smell in your car.
8. Collapsible Beach Buckets
You know what’s hard to pack? Sand toys for kids! That’s why I’m obsessed with these collapsible beach buckets. My kids love playing with while we’re at the beach and then I can easily clean and fold them away. My friend also recommends this as a puke buckets for the car (true story)!
9. Water Shoes for Toddlers
One of the best tips I have for taking the kids to the beach is to invest in water shoes. Carrying kids and stuff back and forth to and from the beach is not for the faint of heart. Sand can be hot on little ones feet so start your day with water shoes on their feet. Once you’re settled and are ready to play in the water you can slip the shoes off but I have one kid who refuses to take her shoes off. These will save your sanity and their feet!
10. Beach Games for Toddlers
Toddlers have very short attention spans! I always envision sitting beach side with a drink in my hand and a book in my lap…then I had kids. I soon learned that my days of laying in the sun were short lived and now I would spend my days at the beach keeping kids safely in the shallow water and keeping sand out of their sandwiches. I also learned that having a few kid-friendly games would go a long way for keeping the kids entertained at the beach. These are foldable and super easy to throw in the wagon for some fun!
Beach Essentials Just for Mom
This list was full of our favorite beach essentials for toddlers but don’t worry, we have a list of our favorite items that the adults will love. We hope the combination of essentials for toddlers and parents will give everyone some peace of mind while they’re relaxing at the beach!
Universal Waterproof Case
You know what my toddlers loved at the beach? Having their photos taken underwater. They would laugh and laugh as we took photos of their little feet playing in the sand under the water.
Let’s talk about a waterproof pouch for your phone. I was first introduced to these in Costa Rica when a group of people I was kayaking with had them. They wore them like necklaces and I just knew this was something I would need to have on all my future trips. They come in super handy when visiting water parks too!
High-speed Charging Technology Power Bank
We highly recommend this portable charger. A long day at the beach could mean you might want to recharge at some point so you can keep taking those adorable photos and videos of the kids. I take this one everywhere I go and I recommend it to all my family and friends.
COMISO Waterproof Bluetooth Speaker
You can’t go to the beach without a bluetooth speaker! When I get comfortable on the beach, I want to play my favorite upbeat music and soak in the views. I personally love this speaker, and it may or may not be just because it’s rose gold! Seriously though, it’s waterproof with 24-hour playtime!
Portable Indoor/Outdoor Lock Box
Let’s get serious for a minute. One of the issues I face when I’m at the beach is leaving behind my personal belongs. I want to enjoy playing in the ocean with my toddlers without looking over my shoulder constantly. I’m very cautious with my phone/wallet after having items stolen from me 3 times on vacation!
Now for the #1 item you won’t want to forget when packing for the beach. Protecting your devices is possible. These handy portable lock boxes that can be used at the beach or even in your hotel room. It’s nice to have peace of mind while on the beach, for this reason it’s my MUST-HAVE item!
Well, there you have it! I hope this list has been both informative and helpful.
